Whole Home Remodel in Portland, OR

Easily one of the most dramatic transformations we have designed and built in recent years, this whole home remodel and addition is a testament to the possibilities of a “studs-out” renovation!

Our homeowners first discovered COOPER Design Build by observing the transformation of a neighboring home on their daily walks with their dog, Molly. At that time they were engaged and considering growing their family but realized their petite home might not have the ability to grow with them without a major addition. While searching for a larger home in the Portland area, they realized that they loved their neighborhood and that embracing a remodel of their current home was the best path forward.

One of our main design goals was to reflect the proportion and scale of the neighborhood’s larger, historic homes while working with a fairly restrictive lot. Embracing a more traditional Tudor style through a highly peaked roofline, the modern contrasting white and charcoal exterior palette is softened by the Scandinavian farmhouse-style board and batten siding to create a harmonious facade that the owners (and neighbors) truly appreciate.

Light pours in from all sides as you enter the practical foyer with built-in storage and seating with a peekaboo view to the beautiful cathedral ceilinged living room. The modern floor plan immediately opens up to a generous and inviting island that anchors the surrounding kitchen. Royal blue and crisp white cabinetry features gorgeous gold hardware combined with a charcoal-toned honed quartz countertop and mosaic marble backsplash for maximum texture. The adjacent open dining room carries the cabinetry through with a built-in bar space. Perhaps our favorite detail of the main level are the floor to ceiling La Cantina folding doors that completely open to the covered patio connecting the home to the large freestanding garage workspace for their copious hobbies.

In the living room, custom cabinetry surrounds the large fireplace featuring full-height shiplap accents while an open metal-railed staircase leads you to the upstairs featuring two sunny bedrooms plus a dedicated office / craft room that features a lovely covered balcony to enjoy the sunset from. An unexpectedly colorful hall bath and upstairs laundry room complete the second floor which feels open & airy due to skylights in the hallway and a large window in the stairwell.

The primary suite is located on the main level featuring large his and her closets, a gorgeous primary bath featuring a custom vanity area and generous storage space, a built-in window seat and French doors opening out to the covered patio in the backyard.

The cozy lower level is dedicated to enjoying a movie or playing a game with friends and family with a bar area to make the fun easy to maintain!  A powder bath, small home gym, additional laundry room, and copious storage closets round out what was formerly the home’s original unfinished basement.

The extraordinary collaboration of our homeowners, our design team, and our construction crew truly shines while living, entertaining, and lounging in this home! It’s truly a custom build that reflects our homeowners’ sense of style and lifestyle, too! Now with plenty of space to spread out, there is room to pursue their varied interests from scrapbooking to woodworking throughout the modern floor plan.
