These homeowners were new to the Portland area, but loved the location of this mid-century modern SW Portland Home. They were intentionally looking for a ranch home where they could age-in-place. However, the home needed more space in the primary bedroom and they wanted an en suite guest space for visiting family and friends. This aging-in-place home remodel added more space for the family’s current lifestyle, while planning ahead for any physical issues they may face in the future.

The COOPER team got to work designing an addition that would add space to the existing primary bedroom and bathroom and create an en suite bathroom for the guest bedroom. In addition, we converted an existing hall bathroom into a modern laundry room and made sure this wing of the house would function well for aging-in-place. The addition also included a new walk-in closet and sewing room off the primary bedroom.

The original primary bathroom included a pop-out glass block shower. The space was disjointed and dated. By extending the wall 12 feet, we were able to create a large, no-threshold shower, complete with grab bars and a fold-out seat. We also utilized the extra space for a toilet with plenty of space in case a wheelchair or mobility device is necessary in the future. All of these touches make the space safe for aging-in-place.

The homeowners wanted to change the original earth-tone color palette in the primary bathroom and opted for blue 12×24 tile in the bathroom with a complementary light blue paint in the bedroom. The dynamic guest bathroom features a maple vanity set against a bold, dark grey accent wall. The shower has jade-colored subway tiles with a floral-inspired tile shower floor.
