Kitchen & Bath Remodel With Dormer Addition in Portland, OR

A Q & A with our homeowners offers so much insight into the true experience of remodeling a home. Please take a moment to learn how COOPER Design Build transformed their lives by transforming their home.

Why did you decide to remodel your house? What problems did you need to resolve?

After living in our house for over 30 years, and spending more time here during Covid, minor annoyances became more glaring, and we decided it was time to make some changes. We wanted to make changes that would make it easier for us to age in place. We had a very dated dysfunctional kitchen that not only was hard to work in, but impossible to clean. There was a very narrow stairway to my art studio, which made it awkward to get large paintings up and down, and difficult to navigate. The main bathroom had a large old clawfoot tub that had seen better days. We had a small primary bedroom with a tiny closet.
Why did you choose to work with COOPER Design Build?

We chose to work with them for several reasons. Initially, we were impressed with the quality of work we saw on other projects. It was clear from the beginning Lane would always be available and would work with us on any concerns.

What are the top things that you love about your newly remodeled space?

There are lots of things we love. The kitchen remodel is our favorite. It functions so well and is easy to work in. Going from a kitchen with one light bulb to all this great lighting is a huge difference. Having the floors refinished and the oak going throughout makes it feel clean, light and more cohesive.

What design details or features are you most excited about?

We love the soapstone countertop on the kitchen island. It’s great for prepping food, taking things from the oven, bringing in groceries, or just hanging out for a quick snack. The lighting throughout is so classy and lovely. The new dormer and stairs to the studio have added light to the house as well as a small gallery area for artwork. The carpeting keeps things quiet and soft underfoot. Our newly expanded bedroom now has closets for both of us and a luxurious large space.

How has the remodel improved your lifestyle at home?

The house feels much calmer, lighter and spacious. It’s easier to keep clean, and is in general more comfortable to be in, and someday we hope it will be great for entertaining again.

What did you most enjoy about working with COOPER Design Build?

The COOPER team was great to work with! Bryce, Wes, Courtney, Tori all listened to our concerns and desires. As our home is over 100 years old, we wanted to maintain its integrity while improving functionality. We were impressed with how well they all worked together and with us to pivot when situations with our old house required changes. Bryce was our go to guy and was always very responsive and respectful.

In speaking with others, what would you say are a few things that COOPER Design Build did well that matter most to you?

They always kept us informed as to the progress on the house through emails and weekly meetings. They kept quite close to the timeline and made sure subcontractors did their work on time and with high quality work. We could not have asked for anyone better to be our Project Manager than Bryce. He was always available and kept things running smoothly. Courtney helped so much with all those selections that must be made from doorknobs to paint color and everything in between.
