Alameda Foursquare – Whole House Remodel & Lower Level Addition

“COOPER Design Builders preserved the character of our craftsman home while expanding into all of its unfinished spaces. They worked with us every step of the way and designed creative solutions to meet our goals. They were able to marry old and new to create a seamlessly integrated home for our family. We LOVE our new spaces and are grateful for the support of their dedicated team.” – Homeowners Melanie & Owen

This classic 1912 Portland Foursquare was reconfigured for a modern family from the absolute top to bottom. All four levels of this gorgeous home were touched by our team to bring out the best of its historic character while optimizing its floor plan to be comfortable and flexible in the 21st century.

The main level of the home was once a dark, cloistered series of isolated rooms; now upon entry, it opens up into a smart, efficient circulation that makes optimal use of the intrinsic traditional floorplan. Welcoming you into the stunning kitchen, period reproduction pendant lighting brightens the oversized island which provides ample entertaining and workspace. The playful two-tone cabinetry, a warm white contrasted with a charcoal gray, is accented by rich Carerra marble countertops and backsplash. The kitchen opens graciously to the formal dining room highlighted by a custom box beamed ceiling in concert with the original built-in cabinetry and window seat. The living room kept its handsome woodwork with the addition of a custom mantle and fireplace surround in keeping with the character of the home.

The staircase and upper levels feature beautiful natural stained woodwork throughout, adding character and richness to the stately period home. A sun-drenched master suite was created by finishing the large attic space. An ensuite bath with elegant rubbed bronze fixtures, a pair of latte colored marble sinks atop a rich, espresso stained vanity blend is completed with a beautifully tiled double shower.

The entire floor of the basement was dug out, raising the ceiling height in order to create a 700+ square foot sunny family room complimented by an open staircase that provides access to the backyard as well as large storage closets and a convenient full bath. Special attention was paid to the lower level of this home by way of structural and seismic upgrades that will safeguard the multi-level home in the centuries to come.
