Before grandma comes and all of the aunts and uncles fill in the guestrooms of your house you might want to consider doing a few remodeling projects.
Upgrade an old kitchen.
If you’re still dealing with builder grade or contractor grade kitchen appliances, countertops, and finishes, it might be the perfect time to update your kitchen. This doesn’t have to be expensive and you can do one item at a time. Perhaps you’re just looking at doing the appliances, countertops or cabinetry. Picking one item will really update the entire kitchen, look and feel of the home.
Update a breakfast nook or eat-in kitchen area.
Now might be the perfect time to really add a wow factor to that eat in kitchen space or breakfast nook. Add layers of texture, long drapery if you have a bay window style, new table and chairs, lots of accents, and a fantastic new lighting fixture.
New stair runner.
Many contractor grade carpets and stair runners can be outdated and wear through fairly quickly. It might be a great time to get a new stair runner with a 2-inch canvas border to really stand up to the wear and tear of frequently trafficked stairs.
Update the entryway.
This is probably one of the least expensive updates you can do. If your entryway is boring, drab and bare, it might be time to update the area with fresh paint, and umbrella holder, coat rack, hat holder, backpack bench, or buffet table perfect for hiding items like keys, wallets and hanging purses. You can also create a beautiful wall of artwork by framing some of your kid’s artwork, pictures or photographs, or finding artwork and sculptures that really speak to you and display them in a collage type setting.
Design around a focal point.
Whether it’s a fireplace, above the fireplace TV, or a large coffee table in the middle of the room, a well-organized floor plan brings fantastic life to a room. Whether it’s your living room, family room or great room, design around a focal point but don’t forget to include pockets of conversation settings, especially if it’s a large room.
