North Portland Craftsman
An ugly duckling transformed into a swan – this 1970’s single level ranch-style home (complete with aluminum siding!) was transformed into a stunning modern Craftsman by COOPER Design Builders.
Finding the original house dark, cramped and outdated, the homeowner wanted to give her residence a completely new style as well as function. She had always dreamed of living in a more quintessentially Portland home featuring two levels and a flurry of vintage details – we attentively listened to her wishes and designed with all of these aspirations in mind.
We based our design on a traditional foursquare layout, however, we fully modernized this formal floor plan to facilitate the owner’s lifestyle and love of entertaining. Clear sightlines throughout the main level are achieved with a vaulted open kitchen/family room concept that directly ties into the formal dining and living rooms. A wide, slate-tiled entryway allows warm southern light to filter through the home. The addition of french doors to the backyard plus an oversized window in the staircase that leads to the brand new second story provide volumes of light, contributing to the open, sunny feel. We highlighted the new design with a timeless Craftsman aesthetic featuring custom details throughout including a built-in bench and sideboard with ample storage, laundry facilities on both levels, and a lovely master bedroom balcony that provides a surprise view of the Willamette River!
