Rose City Park Craftsman – Whole House Remodel & Second Story Addition
This modest bungalow evolved into a historically sensitive two-story, four-bedroom craftsman.
The gourmet kitchen anchors the open, yet cozy, main floor. Upstairs, a large soaking tub exudes master suite oasis.
Our homeowner’s lifestyle had outgrown her small 1920’s bungalow. To reflect her personality and current lifestyle, that bungalow is now a tastefully detailed, two-story, four-bedroom Craftsman with a modern attitude.
Historically sensitive craftsman styling, as seen in the full-height brick chimney, dental molding, eave brackets, and detailed trim on the home’s exterior, delights the eye and respects the existing architecture of the surrounding neighborhood. Inside, on the main level, the open floor plan flows visually in a circular pattern around the stairs. Reminiscent of earlier Arts and Crafts homes where rooms are defined yet interconnected, this layout allows guests to feel comfortable and connected whether the homeowner is entertaining a crowd or having an intimate dinner for two.
In the new kitchen, a deep red stain on the flat slab cherry cabinets gives modern flair in an otherwise period-styled home. At the cooktop, buttercream subway tiles surround a stunning and unique marble mosaic of a rooster and a hen in a pear orchard that was custom made in Lebanon. Its colors unite the vibrant reds of the kitchen with the more traditional sable brown stain on the living room fireplace mantel and glass front built-in cabinets.
While the downstairs is public space, the upstairs master suite, two bedrooms, and hall bath are designed for privacy and retreat. In the master bath, the warm slate blue wall color coupled with a large soaking tub set under two windows defines this master suite oasis. A TV mounted at the end of the tub wall invites one to soak and linger. Run vertically up the shower walls, bands of mosaic tile in sand, cool blues and greens provide modern texture. The sable brown vanity with travertine countertop suggests a nod to tradition.
