When we think of universal design, we often think of institutional products that lack aesthetic appeal. However, many design elements and product choices can be both stylish and functional. Adding light switches at both the bedroom entrance and on either side of the bed, installing comfort-height toilets, and choosing lever door handles are all examples of simple elements that are beautiful, make a big difference, and save money, down the road. More extensive options are adding a guest suite on the first floor that can become the master suite later or installing an elevator. In addition to designing for specific situations, as part of any remodel we consider options that address the needs of everyone in the home now and long-term. Incorporating universal design elements in your remodel will enable you to live comfortably and, most importantly, safely in your home later without the expense and disruption of another remodel.
